Summary

HEARTSTOPPER meets FOOTLOOSE in this cute young adult romance about first love, embracing what makes you different, and standing up for what you believe。

— — — — — — —

Jacob Walters′s dad has worked to make his son′s life a living hell。 But when the cute new transfer student suffers his father′s wrath, Jacob must make the hardest decisions of his life。

Skylar Gray is adopted, nonverbal, and he feels most comfortable wearing skirts。 Life has never been easy, but with a fresh start at a brand-new school, with new parents and in a new state, he just might finally make some friends。 Maybe。 Honestly it′s hard to focus on anything when gorgeous rocker boy Jacob is around。 But it′s hard for Skylar to trust anyone when people have always been quick to ditch him at the first inconvenience; they always seem more than ready to judge him as defective。 And the bullies love to confirm it。 Skylar has only ever had himself, so why would anything be different this time? Especially for an anxious boy with literally no voice。

Jacob doesn′t give a damn, especially not since he came out over the summer。 He expected the hate he got from his father, who mostly acts as if it never happened, but he refuses to let it hold him back。 It doesn′t matter, Jacob′s over it。 He's going to paint his nails, dye his hair, and strike a heavy rift on his guitar if he wants to, even if it means being grounded most of senior year。 But when the cute nonverbal transfer student, Skylar, wears a skirt to school, prompting a sexist new dress code proposal, Jacob decides it′s time to take a stand, no matter the risk to himself。

The cuteness。 The love。 The friendship。 The mentality behind this book was phenomenal。 Not many books portray such controversial issues of todays society in such a way as is written here。 I love how normal teenage issues such as labelling a relationship, do I or do I not love them?, how soon into a relationship is too soon to say I love you?, the anxiety behind your first kiss, first time having sex, when or even if, you should announce your relationship to everyone else, was handled。 I am so in The cuteness。 The love。 The friendship。 The mentality behind this book was phenomenal。 Not many books portray such controversial issues of todays society in such a way as is written here。 I love how normal teenage issues such as labelling a relationship, do I or do I not love them?, how soon into a relationship is too soon to say I love you?, the anxiety behind your first kiss, first time having sex, when or even if, you should announce your relationship to everyone else, was handled。 I am so in love with these characters and this story line was a cutesy, angsty overload and I was here for it from start to finish!! ❤️ 。。。more

Oh this was very sweet 🥹 I’m also really glad we got both POV’s bc it really made the miscommunication in the last third of the book more tolerable。

I wanted to love this SOOOOO fucking bad。

this was generally nice, but i feel like not much really happened。 the main character had some development, but other than that there wasn’t much character exploration either。

After watching Heartstopper on Netflix I needed more so I figured I try this book out。 It did not meet my expectations。 The premise of the story and the conflicts in the book were good but the execution was bad。 It felt like a lot of things were skipped over, like they would be mentioned in a chapter and by the next chapter the thing would be already over。 Like the concert, we see before the concert and then after it。 It would have been nice to see the characters interactions during。 I also foun After watching Heartstopper on Netflix I needed more so I figured I try this book out。 It did not meet my expectations。 The premise of the story and the conflicts in the book were good but the execution was bad。 It felt like a lot of things were skipped over, like they would be mentioned in a chapter and by the next chapter the thing would be already over。 Like the concert, we see before the concert and then after it。 It would have been nice to see the characters interactions during。 I also found it weird that Jacob didn't know who My Chemical Romance was, especially since he said his band is cover band that is sort of emo rock fusion。 He even knows who Five Finger Death Punch is and Pierce the Veil。 It's hard to believe he wouldn't have come across MCR。 。。。more

This is the best writing from Greene, yet。 This isn't just a love story, but a discussion of social issues and the pressures that teens face in today's culture。 Well-rounded characters and a driving plot kept the pace moving。 A must-read for those interested in LGBTQ+ YA contemporary books! oh my god, this was so fucking cute but at the same time so important and touching。 Skylar and Jacob are my little babies。 I want to wrap them up in a fluffy blanket, give them each a mug of hot chocolate and a kiss on their forehead。 But I think Skylar's parents have that covered。 I loved every single character in this book, expect for the bullies and Jacob's parents, obviously。 Jacob's dad can choke and go to hell。 I'm also not a religious person, never was, never will be, but at the same time oh my god, this was so fucking cute but at the same time so important and touching。 Skylar and Jacob are my little babies。 I want to wrap them up in a fluffy blanket, give them each a mug of hot chocolate and a kiss on their forehead。 But I think Skylar's parents have that covered。 I loved every single character in this book, expect for the bullies and Jacob's parents, obviously。 Jacob's dad can choke and go to hell。 I'm also not a religious person, never was, never will be, but at the same time I felt happy for the young, religious, queer people who might read this book and see a church where being lgbtq+ is not frowned upon, but accepted and loved。 There was so much love among these pages, between Skylar and Imani and Seth and Ian and Eric and Skylar's mom and dad。 It warmed my cold dead heart。Also that cover and the little drawings in the book are absolutely gorgeous。I also find it interesting how before this year, I don't think I ever read a book with a non-verbal main character and now this is the second one I read in a little more than a month。 。。。more

For not having labels on his feeling after 2 weeks?? Yeah, no thank you。The fact that Jacob had to basically do everything he did to get Skylar back? No thank you, he should have left and find someone else。 That’s how I see it。And I am totally aware that it was a case of it’s me not the book, because EVERYONE loves this, but I really couldn’t stand it, and I even hated the ending, so yeah, that was it for me。 。。。more

Y'all, that cover sucked me in。 Ever since I saw it I was like imma gonna need that book。 It did not disappoint。 Skylar and Jacob are the cutest。 Awkward AF sometimes (which adorable)。 Both were super relatable (even though I graduated high school in 2005 ha), but Skylar was more relatable。 I too push people away and think they’ll leave and don’t really wanna be my friend。 Seriously this is the cutest first love, found family story。 I loved Skylar’s snarky/sarcastic attitude, and found myself cr Y'all, that cover sucked me in。 Ever since I saw it I was like imma gonna need that book。 It did not disappoint。 Skylar and Jacob are the cutest。 Awkward AF sometimes (which adorable)。 Both were super relatable (even though I graduated high school in 2005 ha), but Skylar was more relatable。 I too push people away and think they’ll leave and don’t really wanna be my friend。 Seriously this is the cutest first love, found family story。 I loved Skylar’s snarky/sarcastic attitude, and found myself cracking up a lot。 Imani and Seth were the perfect friends for him, they did NOT let him go and I’m def here for that。 They lifted him up and showed him (along with his amazing parents) that he was loved。 He just had to embrace it all。 Which he did eventually and I was just a puddle ha。I did get a touch annoyed at the conflict at the end。 But it resolved quickly enough, and Skylar realized it was mostly on him, so I was like okay okay we good。 Jacob handled it well I thought。 He is the senior of the pair and it shows in his reaction and how it went down on his side。 I loved that he was prepared to walk away。 Like the poor guy doesn’t need the extra drama in his life。 But he also deeply loved and cared for Skylar and I was just like a puddle of tears at the end it was so sweet 😭 I’m all like I would not mind a book set like ten years in the future haha, or what happens when Jacob graduates HS and Skylar’s still got a few years left。 Like there’s a lot of potential for more and I want it all lmao。Def heed the TWs, the homophobia is heavy AF, and the bullying。 But it all def screams it’s a book set in the south and I was like yep yep that all tracks。EWYNS was my first read of Jordon Greene's and I'm def gonna have to read the others ha。 。。。more

Skirts are fantastic。 What’s not fantastic is the hate he gets for being who he is, liking what he likes, and dressing how he wants to。 Skylar is nonverbal。 After an illness when he was little, his vocal chores were left beyond repair and passed through the care system, foster houses, and families, constantly being rejected and passed over。 Skylar is adopted by the Gray’s, a lovely couple who lost their son a few years earlier, just before this book begins。 He’s just moved to a new school, in a new town with a new family。 But oh, do they accept him。 His new parents love the shit out of that boy, and it makes my heart so full。 Sky doesn’t expect to make any friends in his new school; he’s always been looked at as a freak for not being able to speak, being bullied and left behind。 That is not the case this time。 Well, it is, but Sky is also taken in by best friends Imani and Seth, two amazing, adorable, and hilarious outcasts who don’t bat an eye at Sky’s differences and stand with him in the face of douchebags and assholes。 And then there's Jacob。 Adorable, rambling Jacob。 (yes, I am aware I’ve said adorable too many times, but it applies, trust me)。 Jacob is a white-haired, green-eyed rocker who gets asked to show Sky around on his first day。 Obviously, he puts his foot in his mouth, but what does that matter when faced with a cute boy。 Jacob came out over the school break, which left his relationship with his parents, especially his dad, rocky at best。 His dad doesn’t accept Jacob and won’t accept that he’s gay。 Despite having a horrible dad and uncomfortable home life, Jacob is still super sweet and happens to have a thing for the new boy。 The friendship and relationship development between Skylar and Jacob is, you guessed it, adorable。 They’re both convinced the other is straight, and then they couldn’t possibly fancy them until finally, they both get a clue。 I love them together。 However, not all is swoony and heart-eyed。 Jacob’s dad wants to institute a new dress code at the school that prohibits boys from wearing anything feminine or even painting their nails, all in the name of saving them and putting them on the path back to God, which is ludicrous。I enjoyed this book。 The characters were wonderfully written, and the relationship developments are heart-warming and delightful。 Every Word You Never Said is about two boys who awkwardly fall in love while facing hate from bullies and adults who should know better。 It’s about expressing yourself, falling in love, and finding your family and people fighting to make the world better。 。。。more

A beautiful story about first love, new beginnings and fighting for equality and acceptance。 I’ll never understand why being different is such a huge deal when it is our differences that make us unique。 Having people who accept you for who you are and love and support you unconditionally can make a huge difference when it comes to finding confidence in being yourself。 It was easy to relate to the characters and I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning。

Pastor DANE! You really went there。 I felt chills in my bones。 I wish I had a Pastor Dane。 I do think the representation of a different type of Christianity and an inclusive church was hugely important in a book that purposefully explores religious trauma through both its MCs, and does so very well。 Sky wanting to cry when Jacob calls him babe。。。 I was weeping。I struggled a lot with the bullying scenes and the extensive use of f-slurs, as well as the menacing atmosphere in Jacob's home from his father。 It's hard, because this is a sign that the author wrote these scenes well, that they affected me so badly, but I did find them deeply upsetting, and reminiscent of similar experiences with homophobic bullying in a religious context。 This is a dark book, for all it's cute and sweet too, and I think there should be some content warnings for bullying; homophobia; queerphobia; homophobic slurs; religious abuse; plus a mention of sex trafficking in a joke context that I really wish hadn't made it into the final manuscript。All in all I think EWYNS is a prescient and timely novel exploring contemporary concerns in a powerful way, there were just some aspects I found too tonally jarring, and maybe a few too many moving parts that made me feel as though the pacing was a bit off sometimes。 Part of me wants to give 3*, part of me wants to give 5*, so I'll settle on 4* and highly recommend if you feel in a safe place to read。 。。。more

A heartfelt story about two boys being true to themselves in a place that doesn’t support them。 Both the main characters have lived hard lives but it makes it so much sweeter when they come together in a lovely slow burn romance。 With a found family, amazing side characters, and teeth grinding drama, Every Word you Never Said hit so many key points for me。
